Hello! My name is Neema Githere and Presentism Travel is an endeavor I have been incubating over the past few years with the aim of putting Afropresentism into practice through pilgrimage-oriented cultural organizing.

“Afropresentism, this indigenous technology of connection and love, informs everything about how I move around the world, the things I take notice of, and what I do with them.”

In 2015, I made a challenge to myself to visit 20 countries before my 20th birthday. In January 2017, with four months to spare, Madagascar became the 20th country on that journey. In the years since, my travel journey pivoted towards being a spiritual research pursuit—endeavoring to trace my own lineage, and explore the intersections between global Blackness + indigeneity.

In total, I've been to 30 countries on 5 continents: Senegal, Ghana, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Egypt, South Africa, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, France, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Norway and England.

Presentism Travel was first launched in January 2020 with the intention of using my own experiences to support other people who are interested in traveling beyond the confines of conventional tourism.

Some of the questions that anchor this endeavor are:

What could travel that is rooted in reindigenization look like? What does it look like to make travel more accessible to Black and Indigenous people, for us to meet and meaningfully exchange with one another? How do we challenge the colonial impulse and undertones behind travel for leisure?

As a platform, Presentism Travel seeks to nurture community and experiments around these questions, facilitating experiences that seed diasporic solidarity—one journey at a time.
